A Greek supermarket chain is to open a new branch in Karyes, the capital of Mount Athos.
The supermarket, which will have an area of approximately 400 square meters, is to be located in what used to be the Cell of Saint Nicholas, which belongs to the Monastery of Great Lavra, and is located directly across from the Church of Protaton. It will be staffed entirely by men.
It will be part of a multi-purpose building which has been constructed in full harmony with the area, and has dormitories, a restaurant-café, a physical therapy clinic, a store with ecclesiastical items, an optician’s. The dormitories are primarily for employees.
The number of visitors to Mount Athos often exceeds 150,000 a year, making the need for
accommodation and hospitality areas imperative.
