FRIENDS OF MOUNT ATHOS: PILGRIMAGE 2016
BYZANTINE AND CRUSADER CYPRUS
22 to 30 October 2016
Following the highly successful pilgrimages to France (2002), Greece (2004), Romania (2005), Finland (2006), Turkey (2007), Egypt (2008), the Black Sea (2009), Russia (2010), Georgia (2011), Serbia (2012), Armenia/West Georgia (2013), Aegean Turkey/Dodecanese Islands (2014) and The Holy Land (2015), the society is now organizing its thirteenth excursion, this time to medieval Cyprus (north and south). The event will be for nine days (including travel) from Saturday 22 October till Sunday 30 October 2016.
The island of Cyprus has a great number of Byzantine monuments. Ten of these are of such historical and artistic significance and are of such value that UNESCO has included them in its list of World Heritage Sites. All ten churches dating from the 11th to the 17th century are located in the spectacular mountainous region of Troodos.
Cyprus has had a rich and varied history as indicated by its abundant archaeological ruins, medieval and post-medieval churches and monasteries, crusader castles and palaces. There are also a number of outstanding museums. Its mountains landscapes, gorges, beaches and Mediterranean cuisine are unmatched.
