Pilgrimage to the Churches and Monasteries of North-Eastern Turkey: 24 October – 1 November 2009

Following the highly successful pilgrimages to France in 2002, Thessaly (Greece) in 2004, Moldavia in 2005, Finland/Russia in 2006, Turkey in 2007, and Egypt in 2008, the Friends of Mount Athos are now organizing a seventh pilgrimage: this time to the Black Sea coast and north-eastern Turkey (October/November 2009).

Our itinerary will provide opportunities for participants to visit the major Byzantine and Armenian sites and places of religious significance in and around coastal Trebizond (the last surviving fragment of Byzantium), including Hagia Sophia Church and Soumela Monastery (a World Heritage site) and the Pontus area. Stops will be made at Rize, Artvin, Kars, exotic Dogubayazit (Silk Road and “remnants of Noah's ark”), Lake Van (10th-century Armenian Royal Church of the Holy Cross) and Ani (numerous 10th- and 11th-century Armenian churches).

Team leader will be Metropolitan Kallistos. The maximum number of participants will be fifty.

FoMA members interested in participating should contact Dimitri Conomos.
