Summaries of presentations at the Conference. Here is an example:
Professor Theodore Giangou (Greece) from the University of Thessaloniki spoke about the impact that Athos canon has had on other monasteries. Athos abodes strengthened, becoming, in the 10th century, the third center of Byzantine Orthodoxy, along with St. Sabbas monasteries in Palestine and Studion monastery in Constantinople. The Athonite Hesychasm became an example for monks far beyond Holy Mount. Athos brotherhood headed the "formalization" of church and monastic tradition. This essential work involved the unification of services, preparation of books for religious services, elaboration of the canons, creating a set of rules of monastic life. Athonite "typicons" became a model for many new monasteries, including Russian. Athos monks themselves often went to Russia, creating monasteries there under their canon. Athos played a similar invaluable role for the Slavic world in general.
The report concludes with participants' ideas about making this international Athos Conference permanent and ongoing.
